CITY VIGNETTES (2016-present), a series of paintings in oil on canvas or panel, is about capturing a moment, a "vignette," in the sense of: "a brief evocative description." This study of specific yet ordinary places is a way to get to know the bones and building blocks of a city, in this case Los Angeles.* By finding beauty and sometimes familiarity in unexpected, and otherwise mundane, places I seek to learn about my new city. By removing all human presence, quiet and introspective moments are found amidst the typically teeming urban sprawl. Meanwhile, nature pervades in each piece. The viewer is invited to create their own story to fill the space.
*The one exception is "Nostalgia," which is in Berkeley, CA.
